Allina's Virginia Piper Cancer Institute announces Shou-Ching Tang, MD, will lead Piper Breast Center research
MINNEAPOLIS 05/03/2010--Cancer research expert Dr. Shou-Ching Tang assumed the endowed Martha Bacon Stimpson Chair in Medical Oncology at the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute's Piper Breast Center on May 1. The Stimpson gift funds a position to provide leadership, expertise and dedicated time in clinical research at the Piper Breast Cancer Program.
"We look forward to working and collaborating with Dr. Tang. His outstanding professional background and ability to provide leadership will strengthen our breast cancer program," said Timothy Sielaff, MD, PhD, FACS, president of Allina's Virginia Piper Cancer Institute.
In addition to his research appointment with the Piper Breast Center, Dr. Tang has joined Minnesota Oncology at their Minneapolis Clinic located adjacent to the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute. He will be available to see patients in consultation at their St. Paul Cancer Center as well starting May 10.

"The level of clinical knowledge and expertise he brings – along with his involvement in breast cancer research – will further expand the cancer care services we provide to the Twin Cities community."
Dr. Tang will also hold a professorship on the medical faculty of the University of Minnesota to coordinate the education and clinical research activities between the University and community oncology.

Dr. Tang comes from the University of Colorado in Denver where he held the post of Professor and Chief in hematology and oncology at Denver Health Medical Center and as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.
Dr. Tang received his medical degree from the West China University of Medical Sciences, Chengdu, Sichuan, China and a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He completed a residency in Medical Oncology at Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Tang's professional background includes a number of faculty and academic appointments at medical universities in Canada and China as well as leadership positions as Director of Medical Oncology and Clinical Research at the University of Miami and Senior Associate Consultant in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He is board certified in Medical Oncology, and is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC).
Throughout his distinguished career in clinical research, Dr. Tang has focused primarily on breast and lung cancer. He has been awarded numerous research grants which have allowed him to conduct investigative projects to advance the knowledge base in the treatment of both disease categories.
He is principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous current research trials principally in the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Tang is first author or participating author on many peer-reviewed articles published in a variety of respected academic journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Cancer, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, and Oncogene.
